Minor to Major Panel Damage
Last updated: 19 April 2026. Reading time: 12 minutes.
The dent you are looking at right now
A shopping trolley clipped your door in the Phoenix Palassio car park. A cyclist swerved into your fender on Vibhuti Khand road. You backed into a low wall at your office in Gomti Nagar and now there is a crease on the bumper. Your son's cricket ball hit the bonnet of the Fortuner.
Each of these produces a different kind of dent, and each one has a wildly different repair cost. The problem is that most Lucknow owners do not know how to classify their own dent before calling a studio. They see the damage, assume the worst, and either panic or accept whatever number the first shop gives them.
This guide fixes that. By the end you will know exactly which of the 4 dent severity levels your damage falls into, what each level actually costs in Lucknow, when paintless dent repair is the right call and when it is not, the 5 hidden costs most studios never disclose upfront, and how to photograph and self-assess your own dent in 60 seconds before you even pick up the phone.
No fear tactics. No upsell. Just the diagnostic framework that lets you walk into any Lucknow studio knowing what you are looking at.
1. The 4 severity levels of car dents
Every dent on every car belongs to 1 of 4 severity levels. Getting this right is half the diagnosis.
Level 1. Minor ding without paint damage
A shallow dent the size of a coin or smaller. The paint is completely intact. No scratches. No cracks. No chips. You can run your fingernail across the paint surface and feel a bump but no break. Common causes. Another car's door opening into yours in a car park. A cricket ball or small object hitting the panel. A minor trolley nudge. These dents look worse than they are, and they are the cheapest category to repair.
Level 2. Shallow dent with minor paint disturbance
A slightly deeper dent 3 to 8 cm in diameter. Paint is mostly intact but you can see light scratches across the dent area. No chips exposing bare metal. Common causes. Low speed bumper contact. Sideswipe from a bicycle or two wheeler. Tree branch falling on the bonnet. These sit in the middle of the cost spectrum and are where most Lucknow owners spend the most money unnecessarily because they do not know panel replacement is usually unnecessary at this level.
Level 3. Deep dent with paint damage
A larger dent 5 to 15 cm in diameter, often with visible paint cracking, chipping, or bare metal exposure. The metal may have sharp creases or folds. Common causes. Low speed collision with another car or a fixed object. Kerb scrape that caught the panel at an angle. Falling debris during construction work common in developing parts of Lucknow. These require proper metal work plus paint work and sit in the upper cost band.
Level 4. Major collision damage
Heavy damage where the panel is structurally deformed, alignment is affected, or multiple panels are damaged. The dent may be paired with rust exposure, broken trim, or damage to internal structural parts. Common causes. Moderate to severe accidents. Falling tree branches during Lucknow storms. Reversing into a wall at speed. These usually require panel replacement rather than repair and are almost always insurance claim territory.
Once you know which level your dent falls into, the conversation with any studio becomes structured rather than speculative.
2. What each dent level actually costs in Lucknow
These are realistic premium studio price ranges in Lucknow for 2026. Authorised service centres sit at the top of these bands and sometimes 30 to 50 percent higher. Independent local garages sit lower but with the trade offs covered in our car painting near me guide.
| Severity level | Repair type | Price range | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 — Minor ding, no paint damage | Paintless dent repair (PDR) | Low 4 figure range per panel | 30 to 90 minutes, same day |
| Level 2 — Shallow dent, minor paint disturbance | Panel level traditional repair | Mid 4 figure to low 5 figure range per panel | 2 to 3 working days |
| Level 3 — Deep dent, paint damage | Panel repair + full respray | Mid 5 figure range per panel | 4 to 5 working days |
| Level 4 — Major collision damage | Panel replacement + paint | Upper 5 figure to 6 figure range per panel | 7 to 14 working days |
Why the spread is so wide. The cost is driven by metal work hours, paint material used, whether a panel can be repaired or must be replaced, and how the specific panel is constructed. A steel hatchback door costs far less to repair than an aluminium SUV bonnet. A Fortuner rear quarter panel costs far more than a Swift rear door.
Car painting and dent work are linked services, so understanding car painting cost in Lucknow gives you the paint component of the pricing picture.
3. Paintless dent repair vs traditional repair
This is the single most important decision in your dent repair journey. Get it right and you save 50 to 70 percent on the repair cost. Get it wrong and you either pay for unnecessary repainting or get a paintless repair that fails because the dent was never suitable for it.
Paintless dent repair (PDR) explained. A specialised technique where the dent is gently massaged out from behind the panel using precision tools. No paint. No sanding. No filler. The original factory paint stays completely intact. Cost is 50 to 70 percent lower than traditional repair. Turnaround is same day for most dents.
When PDR works. Level 1 dents where the paint is 100 percent intact. The dent is accessible from behind the panel. The metal has not been sharply creased or stretched beyond its elastic limit. No rust around the dent. Common Level 1 applications. Shopping trolley nudges, cricket ball impacts, minor parking contacts, and shallow door dings.
When PDR cannot work. Any Level 2, 3, or 4 dent with paint damage. Dents on panel edges or body lines where access is restricted. Double walled panels where there is no access from behind such as some roof sections. Aluminium panels on luxury cars which behave differently from steel. Dents on panels that have been previously repaired.
Why the Level 2 dent is the cost trap. A Level 2 dent with light paint scratching is the category where Lucknow studios most often push owners into unnecessary full panel work. An honest studio will assess whether PDR plus a minor paint touch up is feasible. This hybrid approach saves significant cost and preserves most of the factory paint. A dishonest studio will push full panel respray because the revenue is higher. This is the single biggest money saving conversation to have at any dent repair visit.
Our recommendation. If a studio does not offer PDR as an option for a dent without paint damage, the studio is either not skilled in PDR or is not disclosing the option because traditional repair pays better. Either way, get a second opinion.
4. The 6 panels where dent repair costs vary
Different panels cost different amounts to repair even for the same severity level. Here is the Lucknow pricing hierarchy for the 6 most commonly damaged panels.
Panel 1. Front bumper
Low to mid range in the cost spectrum. Bumpers are made of flexible plastic or composite material which means small dents can sometimes be heat treated rather than filled. Bumpers are also easier to remove and paint off the car, which reduces blending complexity.
Panel 2. Rear bumper
Similar to front bumper. Rear bumpers tend to pick up parking dents more often but the material and process is similar.
Panel 3. Door
Low to mid range. Door dents are common and doors are straightforward to remove for proper off-car paint work. Door edges and handle areas add slight complexity but nothing major.
Panel 4. Front fender
Mid range. Fenders have more curves and meet other panels at visible edges which makes colour blending more demanding.
Panel 5. Bonnet
Mid to upper range. The bonnet is a large flat panel which means any dent is highly visible, and the sheer surface area uses more paint material. Perfect bonnets matter more on resale because bonnets are the first panel any buyer inspects.
Panel 6. Rear quarter panel
Upper range. Quarter panels cannot be easily removed because they are welded to the body. This means all paint work happens on the car, which increases complexity. Quarter panel repairs also risk affecting adjacent panels during prep work.
This hierarchy explains why a dent on your rear quarter panel costs more than the same dent on a door. It is not the studio overcharging. It is the panel itself being more work.
5. The 5 hidden costs studios often do not quote
These 5 costs rarely appear in the initial quote but often show up in the final bill. Ask about each one before booking.
Hidden cost 1. Colour blending into adjacent panels
When a panel is repainted, the colour match is almost never perfect out of the paint gun. The final colour match comes from feathering the new paint into adjacent panels so the transition is invisible. Some studios quote only the damaged panel and charge extra for the adjacent panel blending. A premium studio includes blending in the original quote.
Hidden cost 2. Hidden rust under the dent
Deeper dents have often been sitting long enough for moisture to start rust formation under the paint. The rust is invisible until the paint is stripped. A studio that quotes a flat price without a qualifier for rust is either going to add the cost later or is going to paint over the rust and let it resurface in 8 months.
Hidden cost 3. Trim and badge removal
Proper paint work requires removing handles, badges, beadings, and sometimes lights adjacent to the panel being repaired. Some studios quote only the panel work and charge separately for disassembly time. A premium studio includes disassembly in the quote.
Hidden cost 4. Clear coat feathering across the panel boundary
For dents on body line panels, the clear coat needs to extend slightly beyond the repainted area to maintain continuity. This costs material. Some studios quote only the damaged portion and cut the clear coat sharp at the repair edge, which creates a visible halo effect 3 months later as the clear coat weathers unevenly.
Hidden cost 5. Wet sanding and polishing the finished panel
The final stage that takes a repaired panel from acceptable to factory fresh. Some studios skip this stage to save time and charge it separately if the customer complains. A premium studio includes wet sanding and machine polishing in the quote.
Ask these 5 questions at every studio. A studio that includes all 5 in the written quote is a studio whose final bill will match its initial quote.
6. When insurance claim makes sense and when it does not
This is the question every Lucknow owner faces after a parking lot incident. Should I claim or pay out of pocket. The answer is specific.
Claim insurance when. The repair cost is above 25,000 rupees. Multiple panels are affected. There is structural damage or alignment concern. A third party is at fault and you have their insurance details for subrogation.
Do not claim insurance when. The repair cost is below 15,000 rupees. You have built up a No Claim Bonus of 35 percent or more that would reset on a claim. The dent is purely cosmetic with no structural implication. The insurance deductible plus the NCB loss exceeds the actual repair cost.
The No Claim Bonus maths. Most Indian comprehensive car insurance policies build NCB at 20 percent after year 1, 25 percent after year 2, 35 percent after year 3, 45 percent after year 4, and 50 percent after year 5. A single claim resets this to zero. On a premium car with a high annual premium, the NCB loss over 5 years can exceed 60,000 to 80,000 rupees. For a dent repair under 15,000 rupees, the maths almost always favours paying out of pocket.
The surveyor aspect. For insurance claim repair, the insurance surveyor has to assess the damage before work begins. This adds 2 to 4 working days to the timeline and the studio has to follow the repair methodology the surveyor approves, which is not always the best for your paint. A premium studio like Colomoto coordinates with your insurance surveyor directly and advocates for the right process.
The practical rule. If the damage is below the NCB loss threshold, pay out of pocket. If it is well above, claim. If it is borderline, ask your insurance agent for the exact NCB reset impact before deciding.
7. The 60 second self-assessment before you call any studio
Before you pick up the phone, do this 3 step self-assessment. It tells you more than 4 studios guessing over the phone.
Step 1. Photograph the dent properly
Take 4 photos in natural daylight. One wide angle showing the panel. One close up from directly in front of the dent at 30 cm distance. One at an angle of 45 degrees from the dent to show its depth. One with a coin placed next to the dent for scale. Use your phone's normal camera, not wide angle or portrait mode which distort the shape.
Step 2. Classify the dent
Run your fingernail across the paint surface over the dent. Does your nail catch on any edge. If yes, the paint is compromised and this is at least a Level 2 dent. If no, this is likely a Level 1 dent and is a PDR candidate. Look at the dent from multiple angles. If the metal has a sharp crease or fold line, this is Level 3 or higher. If the dent is smooth and rounded, it is Level 1 or 2.
Step 3. Send the photos to the studio before visiting
Use WhatsApp to send the 4 photos to the studio and ask for a preliminary assessment and approximate price range. A competent studio can give you a band from photos alone. A final quote needs the car in person but the band tells you what to expect. Any studio that refuses to give a photo based band is either not confident in their assessment skills or is protecting their habit of surprise upselling at the counter.
At Colomoto we do preliminary assessments via WhatsApp on +91 7388800192. Send 4 photos and a short description of how the dent happened. We reply with a level classification and approximate band within the hour during working hours.
8. 7 signs your dent repair was done badly
After the repair, check these 7 signs before you sign off and take the car home.
- Colour mismatch visible in daylight. Pull the car out of the studio into natural light and walk around it. Any visible colour difference between the repaired panel and adjacent panels is a colour match failure that needs to be fixed before you leave.
- Orange peel texture on the repaired panel. Run your hand across the paint. A properly finished panel feels glass smooth. A skipped wet sanding stage feels like the surface of an orange peel.
- Overspray on adjacent panels or glass. Check the glass edges, wheel wells, and adjacent trim for paint mist that should not be there. Overspray suggests rushed masking.
- Visible tape lines at panel edges. If the studio masked rather than disassembled, you will see a tape ridge along the panel edge. This will become more visible over time.
- Body filler ridge under the paint. Look at the repaired area from a low angle along the panel. Any ridge or bulge suggests the body filler was not properly sanded before painting.
- Paint runs or drips. These look like small vertical lines of slightly thicker paint. They are caused by over spraying in one pass and indicate poor technique.
- Soft paint at handover. The paint should feel fully dry and firm to the touch. If it feels slightly tacky or the studio asks you not to touch it for 24 hours, the baking cycle was either skipped or was not complete.
Any 1 of these 7 justifies asking the studio to redo the work before you accept delivery. A premium studio expects this walk through and will stand behind their work.
9. How Colomoto approaches dent repair differently
Here is what a dent repair looks like when you bring your car to Colomoto dent repair service.
- Free preliminary assessment via WhatsApp photos. Send the 4 photos and we respond with a level classification and approximate price band within the hour.
- In person inspection with walk through. We show you the dent from the angles we will work from and explain the level classification and recommended repair approach. You see the car on a hoist if needed so we can check for rust or structural impact from the back of the panel.
- PDR first approach wherever the dent qualifies. We save you significant money by not over recommending traditional repair. If your dent is Level 1 without paint damage, we will tell you PDR is the right answer even though traditional repair would pay us more.
- Written quote including all 5 hidden costs. Blending into adjacent panels, trim removal, clear coat feathering, wet sanding, and polishing are all included, not extras.
- Colour match via spectrophotometer on every Level 2, 3, and 4 repair. No eye matching.
- International grade refinish paint systems on every paint job. Sikkens, Glasurit, Spies Hecker, and equivalents.
- Dust free paint booth with controlled temperature and humidity. Proper oven baking cycle.
- Written 2 year warranty covering paint adhesion, colour stability, and clear coat performance.
- Insurance claim coordination. If you are going through insurance, we work directly with the surveyor and advocate for the right repair methodology.

10. Frequently asked questions
Car dent repair cost in Lucknow ranges from the low 4 figure range for a minor paintless dent repair to the upper 5 figure or 6 figure range for major collision damage requiring panel replacement. The 4 severity levels of dents determine which band applies to your specific damage, with level 1 being the cheapest and level 4 being the most expensive.
Paintless dent repair is a specialised technique where the dent is massaged out from behind the panel using precision tools without disturbing the factory paint. It is significantly cheaper than traditional repair, typically 50 to 70 percent less, and takes 30 to 90 minutes instead of days. Colomoto offers PDR at our Lucknow studio for all qualifying Level 1 dents where the paint is intact.
Choose PDR when the paint is fully intact, the dent is accessible from behind the panel, and the metal has not been sharply creased. Choose traditional repair when the paint has chipped or cracked, the dent is on a panel edge, or the metal has been stretched or folded. An honest studio will recommend PDR wherever it qualifies because it saves you significant cost.
A minor PDR repair takes 30 to 90 minutes same day. A panel level traditional repair takes 2 to 3 working days. A deeper dent with major paint work takes 4 to 5 working days. A panel replacement on a collision damaged car takes 7 to 14 working days depending on parts availability and insurance coordination.
Usually not. If the repair cost is below 15,000 rupees, the combination of deductible and No Claim Bonus reset typically makes out of pocket payment cheaper. If the repair is above 25,000 rupees, an insurance claim usually makes sense. The exact break even depends on your current NCB percentage and the insurance company's policy terms.
PDR preserves factory paint and does not affect resale value. Traditional repair with proper colour matching and blending does not affect resale value if done by a premium studio. Traditional repair done at a low cost studio with visible paint mismatch or texture difference reduces resale value by 5 to 15 percent on the Lucknow used car market.
Yes. Any dent that has chipped or cracked the paint exposes bare metal. Lucknow's monsoon humidity above 80 percent for 3 months a year accelerates rust formation on exposed metal within weeks. Minor dents with any paint damage should be repaired within 6 weeks to prevent rust spreading under the paint.
Doorstep dent repair is limited to very minor Level 1 PDR cases where the car cannot be brought to the studio. All other dent repair requires the controlled environment of our paint booth for proper results. Colomoto offers free pickup and drop within Lucknow which makes bringing the car in as convenient as doorstep service without compromising the repair quality.
A premium studio can offer small flexibility on add on services but cannot meaningfully reduce the core dent repair quote without cutting corners. If a studio drops the quote by 20 to 30 percent after you push back, something in the original quote was padded or the studio is now planning to skip a step. Premium pricing is premium pricing for a reason.
Every dent repair at Colomoto comes with a written 2 year warranty covering paint adhesion, colour stability, and clear coat performance on the repaired panel. If any defect appears within the warranty period under normal use, we fix it at no cost.
Yes but the process is different. Aluminium is less forgiving than steel because it does not spring back to shape the way steel does. PDR on aluminium requires specialised tools and significantly more skill. Traditional repair on aluminium is more expensive because welding aluminium requires specialised equipment. BMW, Audi, and some Mercedes models have aluminium panels and should be repaired only at studios experienced with the material.
